Elijah’s summoning of Elijah comes in the midst of everyday activities: Elisha is plowing. Where do you hear God’s call in your daily work?

Recently I was asked to give my testimony in a Presbyterian church. As the guest speaker at a weekend conference on the gospels, I had already given two talks before this assembly. But this was different.

When it came close to the time for his Ascension, he gathered up his courage and steeled himself for the journey to Jerusalem. He sent messengers on ahead.

The family walked into the sacristy, Mom, Dad and a young boy of about 7. “Here’s Jason,” his mom said to Father Josh. “But, he’s not too keen about serving anymore.”

I had friends who knew from a young age what they wanted to do as a career. One friend always wanted to be a cop. Another knew from first grade on that she wanted to teach. Another wanted to be an architect. I envied them.

July 1, 1999 is my Independence Day. That is when I quit smoking after 25 years. For all the pleasure I got out of my addiction, I came to despise it in the last years before I quit. It was an albatross around my neck.

We turn to God who forgives our sins.

Don't walk behind me; I may not lead. Don't walk in front of me; I may not follow. Just walk beside me and be my friend.
